Gabriela Mistral nació en Vicuña (Chile) en 1889 y murió en Hempstead (Nueva York, EE. UU.) en 1957.

TODAS ÍBAMOS A SER REINAS

Todas íbamos a ser reinas,

de cuatro reinos sobre el mar:

Rosalía con Efigenia

y Lucila con Soledad.

En el valle de Elqui, ceñido

de cien montañas o de más,

que como ofrendas o tributos

arden en rojo y azafrán,

lo decíamos embriagadas,

y lo tuvimos por verdad,

que seríamos todas reinas

y llegaríamos al mar.

Con las trenzas de los siete años,

y batas claras de percal,

persiguiendo tordos huidos

en la sombra del higueral.

De los cuatro reinos, decíamos,

indudables como el Corán,

que por grandes y por cabales

alcanzarían hasta el mar.

Cuatro esposos desposarían,

por el tiempo de desposar,

y eran reyes y cantadores

como David, rey de Judá.

Y de ser grandes nuestros reinos,

ellos tendrían, sin faltar,

mares verdes, mares de algas,

y el ave loca del faisán.

Y de tener todos los frutos,

árbol de leche, árbol del pan,

el guayacán no cortaríamos

ni morderíamos metal.

Todas íbamos a ser reinas,

y de verídico reinar;

pero ninguna ha sido reina

ni en Arauco ni en Copán…

Rosalía besó marino

ya desposado con el mar,

y al besador, en las Guaitecas,

se lo comió la tempestad.

Soledad crio siete hermanos

y su sangre dejó en su pan,

y sus ojos quedaron negros

de no haber visto nunca el mar.

En las viñas de Montegrande,

con su puro seno candeal,

mece los hijos de otras reinas

y los suyos nunca-jamás.

Efigenia cruzó extranjero

en las rutas, y sin hablar,

le siguió, sin saberle nombre,

porque el hombre parece el mar.

Y Lucila, que hablaba a río,

a montaña y cañaveral,

en las lunas de la locura

recibió reino de verdad.

En las nubes contó diez hijos

y en los salares su reinar,

en los ríos ha visto esposos

y su manto en la tempestad.

Pero en el valle de Elqui, donde

son cien montañas o son más,

cantan las otras que vinieron

y las que vienen cantarán:

“En la tierra seremos reinas,

y de verídico reinar,

y siendo grandes nuestros reinos,

llegaremos todas al mar".

QUEENS WERE WE ALL DESTINED TO BE

Queens were we all destined to be

among four kingdoms by the sea:

Rosalía with Efigenia

and Lucila with Soledad.

In the Valley of Elqui, surrounded by

a hundred mountains, or more,

Which burned in scarlet and saffron

Like offerings or tributes,

We giddily chanted

And  held it to be true,

that the four of us would be queens

and make our way down to the sea.

Seven-year-olds wearing braids

and light calico smocks,

we chased runaway blackbirds

along the shadow cast by the fig groves.

Four kingdoms they would be, we trilled,

veritable as the Koran,

And they’d be so huge and so complete

they’d reach all the way down to the sea.

Four husbands would we marry

when the time came to wed,

and they’d be kings and troubadours

like David, King of Judah.

And being so huge, our kingdoms

would possess green seas, to be sure,

And seas of algae, crazy pheasant birds.

And bear all kinds of fruit,

including trees laden with milk and bread

So we’d never need to bite metal at all,

Or cut down lignus trees.

The four of us were to be queens,

by royal command, as you can see;

yet none of us ever became queen,

not in Arauco or Copan…,

Rosalía kissed a sailor

already married to the sea

And at the Archipelago of Guaitecas,

her kisser was devoured by a storm.

Soledad raised seven brothers

kneading their bread with her blood,

and her eyes went completely black

from never seeing the sea at all.

In the vineyards of Montegrande,

Straddled fast to her pure and loyal breast,

she cradled the children of other queens,

and hers for never more.

Efigenia crossed paths with a foreigner,

and followed him without uttering a word,

not even knowing his name

for a man is like the sea.

And Lucila, who could native-speak river,

mountain and sugar cane,

among the moons of lunacy

was bestowed her true kingdom.

In the clouds she counted ten children

and on the salt flats her throne,

She was capable of seeing husbands in rivers

and a mantle in tempests.

Yet in the Valley of Elqui, nestling

on a hundred mountains, if not more,

the girls who came after us are singing,

and so will the girls who come after them sing:

“We shall be queens

upon this earth of veritable kingdoms;

and being huge, our kingdoms

will reach down to the sea".

SPRING ON THE AVENUE Again a sudden rumor comes along the avenue; the merry sparrows hear it there and twitter it is a true. The twitter all the secret out to every lad and lass- to all the people swarming by, that spring has come to pass. And yet, of all the teeming crowds, has anybody spied romance is tripping down the street with april at its side?

A THOUGHT   To return to infancy: to be without speech. The threshold between Eden and Heaven. Ground and cloud. Hollowed out, each image will lose its definition bit by bit. An infant in Purgatory still covers her head with swaddling Or is it the sunlight lying on the floor? We try to domesticate our spirits like children. We chase and chastise them until they change. We spend our lives trying to release them again .
