Duncan Bush nació en Cardiff (Reino Unido) en 1946 y murió en Marlborough en 2017.

MINER, ABERCYNON, 1985

After we all went back

I was looking at the boys coming up

in the cage one day, he said,

at their faces and

white eyes, and knew

my own face was as black as

theirs and felt my own eyes

white and tired

in my head, and I

realised, That’s it, that’s how

it is to them, we’re

black, the tribal

blacks of Britain.

When we go to work we’re niggers.

When we go on strike we’re reds.

The trouble is, he said,

and laughed ―black face,

yellowed teeth, red mouth―

is that they see us

in such bloody primal colours.

And the only thing that’s blue

about us ―and he pulled

his sleeve-cuff back

to show me ―is our scars.

MINERO, ABERCYNON, 1985

blancos y cansados

en mi cabeza, y

me percaté, Así es, así es tal

como nos ven ellos, somos

negros, de la tribu

negra de la Gran Bretaña.

Cuando vamos a trabajar somos unos malditos negros.

Cuando hacemos huelga somos rojos.

El problema es, dijo él,

y se rio ―cara negra,

dientes amarillentos, boca roja―

A THOUGHT   To return to infancy: to be without speech. The threshold between Eden and Heaven. Ground and cloud. Hollowed out, each image will lose its definition bit by bit. An infant in Purgatory still covers her head with swaddling Or is it the sunlight lying on the floor? We try to domesticate our spirits like children. We chase and chastise them until they change. We spend our lives trying to release them again .
