Javier Heraud nació en Lima (Perú) en 1942 y murió en Puerto Maldonado en 1963.
YO NO ME RÍO DE LA MUERTE
Yo nunca me río
de la muerte.
Simplemente
sucede que
no tengo
miedo
de
morir
entre
pájaros y árboles.
Yo no me río de la muerte.
Pero a veces tengo sed
y pido un poco de vida,
a veces tengo sed y pregunto
diariamente, y como siempre
sucede que no hallo respuestas
sino una carcajada profunda
y negra. Ya lo dije, nunca
suelo reír de la muerte,
pero sí conozco su blanco
rostro, su tétrica vestimenta.
Yo no me río de la muerte.
Sin embargo, conozco su
blanca casa, conozco su
blanca vestimenta, conozco
su humedad y su silencio.
Claro está, la muerte no
me ha visitado todavía,
y Uds. preguntarán: ¿qué
conoces? No conozco nada.
Es cierto también eso.
Empero, sé que al llegar
ella yo estaré esperando,
yo estaré esperando de pie
o tal vez desayunando.
La miraré blandamente
(no se vaya a asustar)
y como jamás he reído
de tu túnica, la acompañaré,
solitario y solitario.
I DO NOT LAUGH AT DEATH
I never laugh at death.
It just happens
I am not afraid
of
dying
among
birds and trees.
I do not laugh at death.
But I am thirsty at times,
and I need a bit of life,
sometimes I am thirsty and I wonder
as every day, as always,
it happens I have no answers
but a deep-felt and hopeless laugther.
As I already said,
I would never laugh at death,
for I know its face gone pale,
its sullen and somber dress.
I do not laugh at death.
Nevertheless, I know
its white dwelling, I know
its white apparel, I know
it is damp and deadly silent.
Certainly, death has not
visited me yet,
and you will be wondering: what
do I know? Nothing. I know nothing.
That is also true.
However, I do know
I will be waiting for death when it comes,
I will be standing up
or maybe having breakfast.
Gently, I will face death
(do not be afraid)
and as I have never laughed
at its robe, I will be its companion,
in solitude.
