MARÍA ELENA WALSH, traducida al inglés por Roger Swanzy

María Elena Walsh nació en Ramos Mejía (Buenos Aires) en 1930 y murió en Buenos Aires en 2011.

ESENCIA

Nunca nombrarla, nunca.

Ni callarla siquiera.

Solamente crecer de sus raíces

con asombrado llanto.

Ser y morir tan solo

para justificarla

como naturaleza

y sumisa costumbre.

Madurará con pausa

y exactitud de necesaria estrella

y solo incertidumbres

me probarán su órbita,

su doloroso amor, su cumplimiento.

Será un desgarramiento

elemental, constante.

Desesperada espera

lo sé desesperada.

Y sin embargo, nada

persistirá más cierto

que su sabiduría,

que sus sencillas fiestas.

Como el rosal seguro de la rosa.

Y yo seré la sombra

de su florecimiento,

yo viviré acatando

su voz y su silencio,

en indefensa tierra,

irrenunciablemente.

ESSENCE

Never say its name, never.

Not even silence it.

Just grow from its roots

with astonished weeping.

Be and die just

to justify it

as nature

and submissive custom.

It will ripen with pause

and the accuracy of a necessary star

and only uncertainties

will prove their orbit to me,

their grevious love, their fulfillment.

It will be a tearing apart

elemental, constant.

Desperate waiting

I know desperately.

And yet nothing

will persist more truthfully

than its wisdom,

than its simple parties.

Like the rosebush is sure of the rose.

And I will be the shadow

of its flowering,

I will live obeying

its voice and its silence,

in a defenseless land,

defiantly.

A THOUGHT   To return to infancy: to be without speech. The threshold between Eden and Heaven. Ground and cloud. Hollowed out, each image will lose its definition bit by bit. An infant in Purgatory still covers her head with swaddling Or is it the sunlight lying on the floor? We try to domesticate our spirits like children. We chase and chastise them until they change. We spend our lives trying to release them again .
